This month’s café is all about food. What are the environmental impacts of our food choices? Should we eat less animal products? Does one type of animal protein have less of an impact than another? How do we cut down on our food waste? Is it important to eat local produce if we can? And what’s the best thing to do with the food that is left over? We’re looking at all these questions and more, to see how we, as a community can reduce the negative effects of what we eat. There is no single solution, but we can all make a difference!
Join us at Chesham Town Hall and enjoy Fairtrade teas, coffees and homemade cake for just £1 a slice. We will have a local speaker at 1pm, lots of information on display, and samples of lower carbon footprint meals.
The Chesham Community Climate Café has been created by local people who want to do something positive to address the climate and ecological emergency. The café is being supported by Sustainable Chesham, Fairtrade Chesham and Chesham Town Council.
WHAT’S THIS GOT TO DO WITH FAIRTRADE?
Unfair trade and low pay contributes to many adverse impacts on the human rights of farmers and workers. Common human rights violations in agricultural supply chains include: low living standards resulting in poor health; hunger and lack of education; child labour; discrimination against women, who are underrepresented in decision-making, and often face violence and harassment; and safety hazards, such as exposure to agrochemicals.
If that wasn’t enough to cope with, the climate crisis is wreaking havoc on global food production. Farmers are battling less predictable seasons, more plant diseases and weather extremes. They are struggling to harvest their crops and working longer hours, for lower prices. Earning enough to live a dignified life is something we all deserve.
Fighting for trade justice and doing what we can as a community to minimise our environmental impact is the only way we can ensure that all people and our planet will have a sustainable future.
